About Mandawa & Shekhawati

Mandawa is the gateway to Shekhawati β€” Rajasthan's open-air art gallery. This 200-year-old region is covered in thousands of painted havelis (merchant mansions) with frescoes depicting everything from mythology to early motorcars and aeroplanes. The wealthy Marwari merchants who built their fortunes in Calcutta and Bombay poured their wealth into building increasingly ornate havelis in their ancestral towns.

The region includes Mandawa, Nawalgarh, Fatehpur and Ramgarh β€” each with dozens of painted havelis crumbling romantically in the desert sun. Stay in a converted haveli hotel, explore by jeep, and photograph some of the most extraordinary folk art in India β€” all just 260 km from Delhi.
